In January, 1998, over 5 days of continuous freezing rain crippled most of eastern Canada. Many areas were without power for upwards of a month as power crews from all over North America traveled to a worked relentlessly to restore power.

The hardest hit areas were in eastern Ontario and Western Quebec. to that end, the Canadian Military, in concert with local law enforcement and relief agencies provided manpower to help those affected cope with the disaster.

However, many cities and towns that were relatively unaffected saw a great upswell of civic support for these communities. The new city of Quinte West, formed 1 January 1998 by the amalgamation of 4 local communities, provided a large contingent of volunteers and relief supplies to the beleaguered Township of North Dundas, ON.

In gratitude, the Mayor of North Dundas presented and dedicated this tree to the Citizens of Quinte West.
