In Newton, across from Newton City Hall, is the Newton Public Library.

The library is located at the corner of Walnut Street and Homer Street. Parking is off Homer Street, across the street from Newton City Hall.

The library is a large brick structure, with a brick plaza in front, and treed and grassy areas around it. The main entrance is from the plaza by Homer Street, and another from the parking lot that has a bridge over a small pond. Inside there is a long corridor then the actual library. The reference area is in the center and has windows to let in the sun. Other rooms have book collections and areas where you can read.

There are other areas off the corridor that are used for multiple purposes such as exhibits, concerts and meetings. At the time of the visit, I could hear a chamber orchestra playing music.

Before the library, there were private libraries throughout the city. In 1868, one of the libraries, the Newton Library Association, bought land in Newton Centre, and, with other private funds, had a new building built for the residents of Newton. In June 17, 1870, the building was dedicated, and by July the building was open. At that time, there were about 7,000 volumes. Today, there are over 530,000 volumes. By the mid 1980s, a new facility was needed to house the expanded collection and modernize the services. Groundbreaking began in 1989, and the building, the Theodore Mann Building was opened September 15, 1991 at a cost of over $15 million. The date below reflects the date of the new building.
