From the historical marker on site:

"This structure was inspired by the work of Buckminster Fuller, an architect and inventor who developed the geodesic dome. Fuller's designs mimic the structural composition of a sphere, giving the structure tremendous strength. His concepts were employed throughout the world in the 1950s and 1960s.

"The shape caught the attention of Walter Bimson, who commissioned local architects Weaver and Drover to incorporate a geodesic dome into the design of the Valley National Bank building. The building was constructed at the corner of Apache Blvd. and Rural Rd. in 1963. The 100-foot diameter Kaiser Aluminum Panel Dome became a local landmark, known to residents as the Golden Dome. The roof was relocated here in 2009 by Arizona State University after the building was demolished to make way for Barrett, the Honors College."
