The 50 metre high concrete faced rockfill Lyell Dam was built across the Cox's River in 1982.

The impounded waters of Lake Lyell provide water for the town of Wallerawang & the Mount Piper Coal Fired Power Stations. Stage 2 of the dam was completed in 1995 increasing capacity to 34,500 megalitres. In 2002 an improved spillway, a Hydroplus Fusegate System, was installed to improve water flow.
The waymark co-ordinates will take you to the public viewing area where there are signs & diagrams to explain the workings of the dam. You drive over the dam wall but it is not possible nor legal to stop.
