The stone is a square of marble highlighted in sandstone set within the bricks. The church is in a good state of repair with minimal rust on the tin roof. There is no minister attached to the church rather it depends on nearby churches for the occasional Mass.
Portland was the site of Australia's first cement works which operated from 1890 to 1991. The town of Portland took its name from the process used to produce cement. The works was a major employer even building many of the homes & businesses in town to support its workforce. This church & many other buildings were built as a direct result of the income generated by this enterprise.
