Wilfred of Ivanhoe is disinherited by his father, Cedric of Rotherwood. Ivanhoe joins King Richard on the Crusades but returns to Rotherwood one night in disguise. At Rotherwood that night is Isaac of York, a moneylender. Ivanhoe overhears the knight Bois de Gilbert arrange to kidnap Isaac and warns Isaac. The endebted Isaac repays Ivanhoe by giving him a suit of armour and a horse.
Prince John has arranged a tournament. On the first day Ivanhoe appears disguised as the knight Descichado. He defeats the other knights, but declines to reveal his identity. He bestows the honour of the tornament to Lady Rowena, Cedric’s ward. The second day of jousting is a melee. Ivanhoe is outnumbered by the other nights, but another anonymous knight, The Black Knight, comes to his aid. Ivanhoe wins the day and has to reveal his identity.
Ivanhoe was wounded at the tournament and is tended to by Rebecca, the daughter of Isaac. Isaac and Rebecca decide to take Ivanhoe to York to recuperate. Unfortunately their servants abandon them on the way and they seek the protection of Cedric. Cedric is unaware that the wounded man is his son, Ivanhoe. Unfortunately the party is captured by the knight de Bracy and taken to Torquilstone.
The Black Knight hears of Ivanhoe’s plight and mounts a force to take Torquilstone. In the castle de Bracy expresses his love for Lady Rowena and de Bois Gilbert kidnaps Rebecca. The castle is besieged and falls to the Black Knight, who reveals himself to be King Richard. De Bois Gilbert escapes and seeks refuge with Rebecca in a Templar Preceptory. Unfortunately the Grand Master is at the Preceptory and puts Rebecca on trial as a witch that has cast a spell on Bois Gilbert. Rebecca claims the right to trial by combat.
Ivanhoe is summoned to defend Rebecca against de Bois Gilbert in the trial by combat. Ivanhoe defeats de Bois Gilbert and Rebecca is freed. Isaac and Rebecca leave for Granada and Ivanhoe marries Lady Rowena.
