Thomas Becket is a favourite of Henry II, who keeps Henry out of trouble. Becket, a Saxon, is mistrusted by Henry’s Norman court.
Henry is in dispute with the elderly Archbishop of Canterbury. He wants to tax church property in order to support his military campaigns in France. The Archbishop opposes Henry’s plans. The elderly Archbishop eventually dies. Needing a man of his own as Archbishop of Canterbury, Henry appoints Becket to the post.
Becket, however, sides with the church over the taxation. He further enrages Henry by excommunicating Lord Gilbert, one of Henry’s loyal followers. Henry allies himself with the Bishop of London in a plot to discredit Becket. The plot fails and Becket goes into exile in France. Aided by King Louis, Becket makes his way to Rome. He wants to retire to a monastery, but is prevented by the Pope, who wants Becket back in England. Becket meets Henry on a beach at Normandy and a truce is declared, allowing Becket to return to England.
Henry becomes fixated by the problem of Becket. Barons at caught hear of Henry’s problem and decide to act on his behalf. They kill Becket and his deputy, Brother John. Henry does penance by being whipped by Saxon monks. He declares Becket a saint and promises to pursue his killers.
