The island station building was built in 1925 with the Hayley Street Footbridge & overhead booking office added in 1993. Two lifts have since been added.
The station has regular electric passenger services to the Sydney Metropolitan area & controls major freight services, particularly coal & wheat. The station is heritage listed with the NSW Government's Environment & Heritage Office. The station is connected to the Hayley Street footbridge's stairs by a modern canopy.
