Title: "SECRET INTELLIGENCE ACTIVITIES AT CAMP X"

It opened as a secret camp where spies could be trained during the Second World War. Now, it’s recognized as a site of national historical significance.

On a damp Saturday morning, about 100 people crammed into a tent to see the unveiling of a plaque recognizing Camp X. The camp was at what is now the border of Whitby and Oshawa, just south of the LCBO warehouse on Boundary Road. The camp was opened on Dec. 6, 1941, one day before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour. It was a training camp for spies, with about 500 Canadian and Americans trained there.

Among those who trained there was Ian Fleming, the novelist who created James Bond, and the character may have been inspired by Mr. Fleming’s time at the camp.

Richard Alway, chairman of Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada, said, “What designation means, I think, is it’s important to us as Canadians. How we remember our past is important. It helps define ourselves as a nation. It gives us meaning and context.”

The work done at the camp “contributed to the Allied effort in the Second World War. It deserves broader recognition,” Mr. Alway said.
