This is one of only two -- both in Arkansas -- of Duquesny's famous Doughboys to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places. While this statue is standing in the middle of the street, it is just feet away from the Phillips County Courthouse grounds. It lacks any kind of plate with Viquesney's copyright or signature, but is documented at Secondary Website 1. The Doughboy is just over six feet tall, and he looks south down historic Cherry Street. He walks through shattered tree stumps and barbed wire, his rifle in his left hand and his right hand held high above his head, clutching a hand grenade. On the base, which is about nine feet tall, is a dedication plaque also facing south that says:
Erected in Honor
of
The Men & Women
of
Phillips County
Who Served in the
World War
1917-1918
The Doughboy was dedicated July 10, 1927. Acquisition of the monument was sponsored by Phillips County Memorial Association, the 7-Generals Chapter of United Daughters of the Confederacy, and the City of Helena. A part of the rifle barrel and the bayonet are missing, and the statue could benefit from some cleaning.
