This bright mural attracts the eye of passing traffic. It is painted on the concrete block wall of a room in the Manunui School near Taumarunui. The colourful art work appears to portray a tree filled with life, leaves, birds and human figures. Perhaps it is the Tree of Life? Or maybe a Tree of Education? Or maybe it represents the erupting volcanoes within the nearby Tongariro National Park. Beside it stands two mountains which must surely be the nearby volcanoes of Ngauruhoe and Ruapehu. Ruapehu mountain also shows a blue river, the Wanganui River which passes so close to the school grounds. Maori designs border the base of the mural.
Maybe someone can tell us what the true meaning of this mural is about.
The mural can be seen from the footpath outside the school fence, which is another art creation in itself. The school is on the corner of Totara Street and Rata St, both named after NZ native trees.
