Jorge OrtigaTHE LOCATION"The project's of the Monchique Cemetery has a obvious concern to maintain the morphological features of the original land of the Quinta de Monchique, while adapting their configuration requirements of the equipment that was installed, and also the landscaping on the slope of Monte da Penha, visually working as a green area. In addition to responding to the needs of a traditional cemetery, the project di not neglected to consider other images of the funeral grounds, which have been gaining importance in today's society, as in the case of the burial areas with a casual design in order to be "seen" as green spaces - towards funeral garden - where their furniture is reduced to a minimum."

THE PERSONMayor of the city of Guimarães, Dr. António Magalhães:
BA in Historyfrom the Faculty of Arts, University of Porto, was elected as Member of the Assembly of the Portuguese Republic for the 1st time in 1976, where he remained for 11 years as such. Was elected Councillor for the Municipality of Guimarães from 1979 to 1990. In late 1982 he was Deputy Mayor of Guimarães, ending the mandate in late 1985. In December 1989 he was elected Mayor of Guimarães, with an absolute majority, a position he holds to be re-elected successively in 1993, 1997, 2001, 2005 and 2009.

Jorge OrtigaO LOCAL"O projecto do Cemitério de Monchique teve como preocupação evidente a manutenção das características morfológicas do terreno original da Quinta de Monchique, embora adaptando a sua topografia às exigências do equipamento que foi instalado, e ainda a integração paisagística na encosta do Monte da Penha, funcionando visualmente como área verde. Para além de responder às necessidades de um cemitério tradicional, o projecto não descurou considerar outras imagens do recinto fúnebre, que têm vindo a ganhar importância na sociedade actual, como são os casos das áreas de inumação com um desenho informal por forma a serem “lidas” como espaços verdes – no sentido do jardim funerário – em que o respectivo mobiliário se reduz ao mínimo indispensável."

Licenciado em História, pela Faculdade de Letras da Universidade do Porto, foi eleito como Deputado à Assembleia da República Portuguesa pela 1ª vez em 1976, onde se manteve durante 11 anos, nessa qualidade.
Foi Vereador eleito para a Câmara Municipal de Guimarães desde 1979 até 1990.
Em finais de 1982 foi Vice-Presidente da Câmara Municipal de Guimarães ,terminando o mandato em finais de 1985.
Em Dezembro de 1989 é eleito Presidente da Câmara Municipal de Guimarães, com maioria absoluta, cargo que mantém por ser sucessivamente reeleito em 1993, 1997, 2001, 2005 e 2009.
