Port Isabel’s history is forever linked to the fate of two countries, the United States and Mexico. The importance of Port Isabel’s role is reflected in the great military minds that were sent to this area during the U.S. Mexican War.

19. Fort Polk (1846-1850). Established by General Zachary Taylor 3/24/1846 and named for Pres. James K. Polk. Site of the 1st south Texas military hospital. Medallion location: Southwest corner of Garcia St. and Maxan St.
