The warehouse was owned and operated, as the name suggests, by Edward Fison Ltd. who operated this complex of buildings as a maltings from 1849. They were one of the first British companies to diversify and produce malt extract for brewers and bakers. Prior to that the buildings were an infantry barracks. In 1934 this old-established business was acquired by Muntona Ltd. a firm from Bedford. The business grew steadily until a site in Stowemarket was found which had room for greater expansion and the Ipswich site was closed in 1953.
For some time the sign was almost undecipherable but as the over-applied paint has flaked off with the result that a piece of Ipswich's history has become visible once again.
