The windmill stands near to the bank of the Leeds - Liverpool Canal and was built circa 1800, about 20 years after the canal was opened, but stopped being used as a windmill around 1850. The windmill no longer has any sails attached.

It became an English Heritage Heritage Grade II listed building in 1988. link

The windmill stands next to a pub named the wind mill and shares a car park. As such the outside of the building is always accessible. The inside of the mill can be visited during the gallery opening hours.
