"Parbold is a small village but the arrival of the railway led its growth as a commuter village. Even so it still only has a population of 2700.

Although in the centre of Parbold, the station also serves the village of Newburgh and the name of the station has changed a number of times. It has been 'Newburgh for Parbold' and 'Parbold for Newburgh' and from 1973 simply Parbold.

The station has two platforms and is on the Manchester to Southport line and managed by Northern Rail. Access between the platforms is provided by an underpass.

In 2005 the stone station buildings underwent a £250,000 restoration project which saw the ticket office restored to its former glory and new fences and CCTV installed."

The platforms of the station are immediately next to Station road and as there is no bridge there are automatic electrically operated crossing gates to halt road traffic whilst the trains cross the road.
