This gorilla is constructed of concrete, and his hat is made of metal. He stands on a concrete base, waving at passersby. It is a remaining remnant of a concrete business that was once located at this address, but that business has moved, and the gorilla, as a mainstay of the community, stayed behind.
Here is an article about when someone stole the gorilla's hat, back in 2009 -
" ROCK SPRINGS, Wyo. — The crooks behind this Rock Springs heist must have some big heads.
Police in the southwestern Wyoming town say someone took the 45-pound steel cowboy hat from atop the concrete statue of a gorilla in front of the Concrete Palace, a statuary shop.
Shop owner Curtis Keelin says his daughter-in-law phoned police when she spotted the crooks hauling away the hat on Thursday afternoon.
Keelin says he doesn't expect to get the hat back, so he plans to make a new one. Keelin made the 4,500-pound concrete gorilla about five years ago, and added the steel cowboy hat a year later.
The gorilla statue on Elk Street has become a landmark. Says Keelin, "I bet you that gorilla gets hundreds of pictures a year with the tourists.""
