Only foundations remain from one of the historically most important settlements on the Czech territory - ancient Slavníks Stronghold (Slavníkovské hradište) in village Libice nad Cidlinou in Central Bohemia.
The fact that the stronghold of Libice was an important Early Medieval centre is reflected in both archaeological and written sources. In the second half of the 10th century, Libice served as a power centre of the Slavník dynasty, one of ruling houses in Bohemia. In September 28, 995 the entire dynasty had been slaughtered by their big rivals Premyslids (Premyslovci) and the hill-fort came to another house - Vršovci. The history of this family came to an end in 1108 when they were accused of high treason and likewise murdered by Premyslids. The hill-fort stood empty until 1130 when it was destroyed by fire. The excavations uncovered stone foundations of early Romanesque church and palace.
