This statue has always been an icon in the district of Gore, a tribute to the Brown Trout fishing region of the South Island.
The statue was commissioned by the Gore Lions Club to commemorate their 25th Anniversary. It was unveiled by Bob Jones, a well known trout fisherman, on the 18th February 1989.
The Plaque, on the base of the statue, is situated in the centre of Gore in a green parkland triangle bordered by Norfolk Street and Ordsal Street.
