The first outdoor sculpture to be accepted into the museum's collection and the first outdoor piece in SCU's public art collection, the sculpture was donated by Fletcher Benton Studio as a permanent art installation in 2013.
A post on the museum's Facebook page described the piece this way:
"The piece was originally installed in August as part of our exhibition "Fletcher Benton: The Artist's Studio." The exhibition was designed to bring visitors "into the studio" so they could get a glimpse of Fletcher's creative process. The exhibition included several studies of the piece as well as the final maquette from which "Going Around the Corner with X" was scaled up. Benton intentionally left the work unfinished so you can see the welding marks and some of his own notations on the steel. Though very indicative of his body of work with its large geometric forms and seeming implication of motion, it is intended (in part) to be educational--explaining his working method."
