The sound artist, Max Neuhaus, wanted you to discover the humming sound coming up from what looks like an ordinary subway grate beneath your feet. There is no plaque or sign to indicating its presence.
The sound art was installed in the heart of Times Square in 1977, disconnected in 1992, and reactivated in 2002. Thousands of people pass by the sound installation everyday, few will stop to listen. The sound is obvious even when there is heavy vehicle and pedestrian traffic. As you walk north towards from 45th Street towards 46th Street the sound, a steady hum, gets louder. It reaches peak at the 46th Street end of the grating.
The steady nature of the sound installation makes it obvious the that sound is not related to the usual subway varying noises that can often be heard coming up from street grates. Stop and listen and see if others will figure out what you are doing. Nobody did while I was there even though I had my ear pointing at the ground, obviously listening to something.
The location website link takes you to a YouTube video where you can see the grate and listen to the sound.
