The sign reads:

"THE Pirate Attack in Berufjörður in 1627

After landing at Berufjörður, Algerian pirates came to Berufjörður on 8 July 1627. There was warning of their coming, so most people had fled from their farms before they arrived and they succeeded in abducting only three people. They did not find the vicarage at Eydalir; according to the local tradition, the aged vicar and poet Einer Sigurdsson (1538 - 1627) put them off the scent. Several place names in the district refer to the visit of the Turks"
