This is the Laos Army Museum, one of the few museums of the kind in the country and definitely the largest and most important. It's located in Vientiene, the capital city, and it's a bit off the center.

Laos is one of the last officially Communist countries in the world and this doctrine shows in the museum. The guard wears a Lao uniform, which looks pretty much like the classic Chinese communist uniform, the same clothes as we got used to see in old Mao pictures and draws.

The exhibit, as expected, shows the history of the National Army, from the fight against the Japanese, during the Second World War, to the more recente conflicts.... French, USA, South Vietnam and Thailand.

It's a poor exhibit, mostly based in pictures, very old style. But the outdoors section worth a visit by itself. There are a few tanks and aircraft, as well as diverse military equipment, and three interesting sculptures, very Revolutionary, very Communist, very powerful, very picturesque.

To get there, if you like, you can walk. It's about 3,5 km. Otherwise, from the central bus station, take bus number 29 (2,000 kip). A Tuk-Tuk from the center costs about 25,000 kip.

Note: even if the museum is closed, the guard may let you take a look around in the outdoors exhibit. Photography inside is prohibited but permitted outside.
Opening hours: Tuesday to Sunday at 8:30-11:30 pm and 1:30 pm to 4:00 pm

Open all year: Except for some holidays
