Niagara-On-The-Lake McDonald's
Niagara-On-The-Lake in Ontario was at one time the Capital of Canada. As such, it is a very historic location.
Numerous battles were fought here, and the town has remained true to its historic nature.
As a tourist location, the citizens of NOTL are determined to keep true to the appearance of the town, but when someone wanted to open a McDonald's, the problems started.
To allow a McDonald's in NOTL would have a serious impact on the image of the town. This had to be prevented, but still the town knew that they could not stand directly in the way of progress. Finally, the future owner came up with some concessions that the town was able to agree with, and that allowed the restaurant to be built.
- The McDonald's exterior design would have to match the existing appearance of buildings in the area.
- The McDonald's would NOT be permitted to have the Golden Arches on a post and/or above the height of the restaurant.
- The McDonald's would have to have hours of operation that reflected the spirit of the town, as much of the town closes in the evening, therefore there could be no 24 hour service.
This McDonald's isn't even that close to the tourist area, but the guidelines were approved and the restaurant was built.
The included images show the restaurant with its exterior design, and the only sign that is not attached to the restaurant for people on the road to know there is a McDonald's there. Note the lack of colour and the sign out front is the only one. There is no Golden Arches way up in the air, for all to see from great distances.
The Blue Quasar
{Taken from Carguide Magazine - NIAGARA-ON-THE-LAKE, Ont. - A great hubbub arose in Niagara's quiet wine region a few years ago over the proposed construction of a McDonald's restaurant in historic Niagara-on-the-Lake. Locals scoffed at the idea of the corporate conglomerate's golden arches glowing greasy over the hoity-toity splendour of the little town.
The local man behind the project (already the owner of a handful of McDonald's across the region), approached the problem with a unique plan, however. He proposed a building not like the company's traditional circus tent-like structures: softer colours, smaller signs - overall a more serious, grown-up approach. The town bit and the region's newest McDonald's has been turning out Big Macs and Chicken McNuggets ever since.
