Near the German border, in the beautiful Westerwolde (Southeast Groningen),
is the fortress Bourtange. A unique historic fortification that has no equal.
Present and past go perfectly together in this small, cosy fortress town.

In 1580 William of Orange gave the order to build a fort on the sand ridge in the
Bourtanger moor, on the border of modern Germany. On the order of William Louis of
Nassau the fortress was raised in 1593. Between 1593 and 1851 Bourtange was an
important fortress

In der Nähe der deutschen Grenze im wunderschönen Westerwolde ( Süd-Ost –Groningen )
liegt die Festung Bourtange. Sie ist ein unvergleichbares historisches Verteidigungsbauwerk.
Die Festung Bourtange ist in jeder Hinsicht einmalig.Gegenwart und Vergangenheit gehen Hand
in Hand in der kleinen gemütlichen Festungsstadt.

Im Jahre 1580 gab Willem von Oranien den Auftrag, auf einem Sandrücken mitten im Moor, an
der Grenze zu Deutschland, ein Fort anzulegen.
Im Jahre 1593 wurde durch Willem Ludwig von Nassau mit dem Bau der Festung begonnen.
Zwischen den Jahren 1593 und 1851 war Bourtange eine wichtige Festung.
