The ancient parish church of the village of Agua de Pau dates back to the time of settlement of the island of São Miguel. The oldest document relating to this temple is dating back to 1488. In 1522, the early Igreja de Nossa Senhora dos Anjos was destroyed by the volcanic eruption of Vila Franca do Campo. The present church was completed in 1774, as it is engraved on the Cross of the Ordem Militar de Nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo inside the church.
