The "Men of Cheltenham" war memorial, located in the centre of Long Garden, has an obelisk, made of Portland stone, as its upper part.

Here, we are told that the base if 5 feet high and the obelisk is 29 feet tall with both being made from Portland stone. The entry describes the monument as:
Large tapering stone obelisk surmounts two stepped stone plinth. Top step of plinth bears inscription, names on plinth below. Whole set on three-stepped stone base in paved area.
Carvings at bottom of obelisk include town coat-of-arms and wreath with reversed sword and dates "1914-1919".
The memorial was unveiled on 1st October 1921.

The obelisk, designed by R L Boulton & Sons of Cheltenham, is located in the Promenade adjacent to the Municipal Buildings. It is made of a combination of local stone quarried in Leckhampton and Portland stone. On the four elevations are commemorated 1284 local dead with one (the East elevation) listing those Cheltonians killed or died whilst serving with the Gloucestershire Regiment.
