Ayutthaya was the Thai capital before Bangkok. That was until the Burmese razed the city in the 18th Century. Nowadays it's a small nice town and home of a set of temples which were classified as World Heritage by UNESCO.
Anyone arriving to Ayutthaya by train can take a tuk-tuk or taxi or just walk for 5 min and take a little ferry across the river, and from there explore the old wonders of the town. It's a short cross, takes 3 minutes and costs almost nothing.
