"This Icefields Parkway stamp was part of a ten stamp set issued on June 1, 2002. The theme of the set was Tourist Attractions, and covers such places as Stanley Park in Vancouver, Peggy’s Cove in Nova Scotia and Agawa Canyon, Ontario. This particular 65-cent stamp was designed by Catharine Bradbury and based on a photo by Keith Moulding. The Canadian Bank Note Company Limited printed 1 250 000 of this stamp.
The image features the Columbia Icefield, where tourists can have Snocoach or Icewalk tours of the Athabasca Glacier. The Columbia Icefield is between 100 and 365 metres deep and has an area of 325 square kilometres. The glacier has been a victim of global warming and is melting rapidly. It is not recommended to climb the glacier as crevasses and weak spots in the ice may cause injury or death. The Icefield has two restaurants, a gift shop, photographer and hotel on site for guests wanting to stay a little longer.
The Area
The Ice Fields Parkway, also known as Highway 93, is a stretch of highway that connects the towns of Lake Louise in Banff National Park and Jasper, in Jasper National Park. The road, which was completed in 1940, was named after the Columbia Icefield, a point of interest along the route and the image on the stamp. There are many other points of interest along the highway as well, including Bow Summit and Peyto Lake, Crowfoot Glacier, Athabasca Falls, Mistaya Canyon and more. Various campgrounds can be found along the length of the road, and a national parks permit must be obtained for travelling the Parkway. Many people consider the Ice Fields Parkway to be among the most beautiful highways in the world."
