"Senator Capitol Kitty was, for thirteen years, a beloved feline resident of Capitol Park that surrounds the California State Capitol in Sacramento. Although her origins remain a mystery, this black cat came to be (obviously) well-fed and cared for by many human employees of the Capitol Building. She became such a celebrity that former First Lady Sharon Davis wrote a fictional children's book about her, entitled "The Adventures of Capitol Kitty." The cat went by both that name as well as Senator Kitty, as she preferred to sit outside the Senate wing of the Capitol. In August of 2004, Senator Capitol Kitty was diagnosed with cancer and put to sleep. Soon afterward, a plastic sign was placed to mark her favorite place to sit. That was replaced by this permanent marker." (visit link)
