A somber eternal flame on the northwest corner of the Childress County Courthouse grounds placed by the local American Legion reminds us that freedom is not free.
An extrememly illegible plaque affixed to the base of the flame reads as follows:
"FLAME OF FREEDOM
This flame was ingnited with ceremony
Let not mankind extinguish it unceremoniously
Dedicated to the men and women of Childress
Whose service in the Armed Forces of the United States
Helped to preserve its freedom"
