The San Francisco Zoo

The San Francisco Zoo was founded in 1889,
when a grizzly bear was given as a gift to the city. This first small zoo
was located in the Mission District. The zoo was moved to Golden Gate Park
for awhile (the bison exhibit remains there), and later moved to its current
location. Over the years the zoo acquired many more animals, building new
exhibits as they were needed. Many of the exhibits were built in the
1930's. With a drive to modernize and create a "new zoo," many exhibits
have been remodeled, or completely torn down and rebuilt.
