Ayutthaya was the capital of the Thai kingdom, before the Burmese razed the city in the 18th Century, which caused the change of capital to the current one.

In a corner of the courtyard of one of the temples (Wat Mahathat), there is a famous statue of a Buddha, made in sandstone, which is now buried, only the head remaining above surface but even this part of the sculpture is embraced by the roots of a Bodhi tree. The tree is also climbing and involving a nearby brick wall.
