Helen's headstone is near the west fence of the cemetery and near the centre. Given that this is the first zinc headstone we've encountered, I had to rap it with my knuckles to convince myself it was actually zinc. The hollow ring was a pleasant sound to hear. Unfortunately it has not been treated entirely kindly through the years. As a result the rear dormer at the top of the headstone, just under the urn, has been caved in somewhat and is severely cracked.
Helen M. Garr was born Helen Hunt in Elkhart, Indiana in late 1848. Her exact birth date is not known. In December of 1868 she married Judge Henry H. Garr and in 1886 moved with him to the Flathead Reservation in Montana where he was superintendent of the Indian school. In 1887 or 1888 they moved to Great Falls where he assisted in the building of the smelter there. They then moved to Columbia Falls, Montana. Helen died May 14, 1903 while en route from California to her home in Whitefish.
