Dallam County Sheriff George W. Alexander was killed in the line of duty in 1930. A pink granite obelisk in his honor stands in the northeast corner of this lovely park.

From the Officer Down Memorial website: (visit link)

"Sheriff Alexander and two other officers went to serve an arrest warrant on a suspect. Sheriff Alexander and another officer entered the front door while another officer covered the back door. When Sheriff Alexander entered the house he was shot and killed. The third officer entered the back door after hearing shot and shot and killed the suspect. The officer then shot and killed the suspect's brother, who was armed with a shotgun, and wounded a third suspect. Sheriff Alexander died 40 minutes later.

Sheriff Alexander had been with the agency for 5 years.

MOST RECENT REFLECTIONS:

Dear Grandfather George,

We remember with great sorrow your untimely passing. You were joined this Monday by your granddaughter Ann Claire Bridges Walker upon her passing. You and Grandmother Allie hold a special place in our hearts and the history of the State of Texas. You were elected Sheriff and on your death, Allie was appointed Sheriff to fill the remainder of your term.

That appointment means that Grandmother Allie was the only female Sheriff to serve in the history of Dallam County, Texas . . . .
