Fleet Stewart Lentz, Sr.
September 20, 1916 - December 1, 1989
Fleet Lentz lived his life in Mercedes, Texas.
Publicly active in several institutions to bring about the betterment of the community, he maintained a deep and keenly informed interest for all living things.
As the son of a Valley pioneer nursery man, he began growing a particular passion for trees at an early age. It never left him. He follwed that passion to the very end of his life.
This park was his own way of expressing what he saw as lasting beauty in the world he lived in. It was begun and nurtured quietly in keeping with much of his own life.
There were few, if any, native shrubs that he did not know by name in Spanish and in English. He knew the histories and practical uses of almost every living thing that grew in these parts. That knowledge was shared with whomever chose to seek it.
Few knew the Rio Grande Valley in general, and Mercedes in particular, as he did. Almost expert in the Spanish language and formally schooled in history, he knew 'both sides of the river.' He had an abiding faith in God and Creation, his own family, and the place where he lived.
His was a life of caring.
This park is an expression of that care.
