The house was built between 1847 and 1849 for Henry Goulding, who was a machinery manufacturer and founder of the Worcester Mechanic's Association. Goulding sold his woolen machinery business to Willard, Williams and Company at a hefty price, enabling him to move this house to its present site in order to build a large Italianate mansion on Harvard St.
