Built for Stephen Salisbury II by master builder Elias Carter. Stephen Salisbury II was a wealthy financier, civic leader and philanthropist. His son Stephen III continued to live in the house after II death in 1884. Upon Stephen III death he left the home to the Worcester Art Museum, who used it as an Art School. It was sold a couple years later to the American Red Cross for its headquarters.
