Home to one of Worcester's most successful businessman and philanthropists, George Whitcomb. He was born in Templeton, MA in 1842, educated at Phillips Academy and Amherst College, he founded the Bay State Envelope Company. It began as a one man operation and grew into a very large company. By 1895 1/3 of all staple envelopeds where manufactured in Worcester. Whitcomb sold Bay State to the U.S. Envelope Company in 1898. He was also a trustee of Amherst, Mount Holyoke and Oberlin Colleges. Whitcomb dies in 1918 and bequeathed his home to the Society of the Blind.
