Otis Putnam was a native of Leicester, MA born in 1831 and began work in 1847 as a store clerk for John B Wyman in Worcester. Putnam remained in the business thru many changes in ownership, named HH Chamberlain in 1850, then Chamberlain & Bernard in 1857, and finally he became a partner changing the name to Barbard, Summer & Putnam. In the last quarter of the 19th century the company grew rapidly become one of Worcester's largest department store. Today the residence is office space mainly for lawyers.
