The State Mutual Life Insurance Company was incorporated in 1844 and was the 5th largest insurance company in the US at the time. The founders and directors were some of the most prominent citizens in Worcester. The business earliest located was at 100 Main Street in the rear of the old Central Bank. In 1870 the company formed a real estate partnership with the Merchants' and Farmers' Fire Insurance Company to build the block at 240 Main St. The State Mutual Building took over the entire building in the 1880's and outgrew the building entirely by 1897, moving to 340 Main St.
