A gauche de l'arche identifiant le cimetière St-John à Bromont se trouve la pierre tombale de Nancy Todd, décédée à l'âge de 100 ans et 27 jours. A ma connaissance elle est la seule centenaire de ce cimetière.
En plus de Nancy Todd, quelques personalités connues ont vu le jour en 1847. En voici quelques unes :
11 février : Thomas Edison , inventeur américain.
3 mars : Alexandre Graham Bell, inventeur britannique.
5 septembre : Jesse James, célèbre hors-la-loi américain.
8 novembre : Bram Stoker, écrivain irlandais auteur de Dracula.
Quelques évènements de l'année 1847 ont aussi retenu mon attention:
22 - 23 février, guerre américano-mexicaine : victoire des États-Unis sur le Mexique à la bataille de Buena Vista
1er mars : L'état du Michigan abolit la peine de mort.
1er juillet : Émission du premier timbre poste aus États-unis.
26 jullet: le Libéria devient indépendant et se dote d’une Constitution de type nord-américain, qui réserve le statut de citoyen aux seuls noirs venus d’Amérique et leur descendance6.
Création du drapeau Libérien inspiré de celui des États-Unis.
9 octobre : la Suède abolit l’esclavage dans son unique colonie, Saint-Barthélemy.
Nancy Todd s'éteidra le 23 mai 1947, la même année qu'Al Capone (48 ans), gangster italo-américain et Henry Ford (84 ans) constructeur automobile américain.
Année suivant de peu la fin de la seconde guerre mondiale, 1947 est riche d'évènements historiques. En voici un bref aperçu :
1er janvier : mise en place de la bizone en Allemagne.
10 février : traité de Paris. Traités de paix avec les alliés de l'Allemagne, la Bulgarie, la Finlande, la Hongrie, l’Italie et la Roumanie. Tous ces pays doivent renoncer à la bombe atomique.
22 mai : Début officiel de la Guerre Froide.
8 juillet : date du célèbre incident de Roswell. Un objet volant non identifié se serait écrasé au Nouveau Mexique.
26 juillet : création de la CIA en prévision de la guerre froide.
Nancy Todd a sans conteste vécu un siècle mouvementé. Elle a connu la révolution industrielle, la guerre de Sécession, la création de la Constitution Canadienne et les deux Guerres Mondiales. Qu'elle repose en paix!

To the left of the ark identifying St. John cemetery is the headstone of Nancy Todd, who died at the age of 100 years and 27 days. To my knowledge it is the only centenarian of this cemetery.
In addition to Nancy Todd, some known personalities were born in 1847. Here are a few :

Nancy Todd passed away on 23 May 1947, the same year as Al Capone (48), Italian-American gangster and Henry Ford (84) American automaker.

July 8 – A supposedly downed extraterrestrial spacecraft is reportedly found in the Roswell UFO incident, near Roswell, New Mexico.
July 26 – Cold War: U.S. President Harry S. Truman signs the National Security Act of 1947 into law, creating the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), the Department of Defense, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the National Security Council.
Nancy Todd has certainly lived an eventful century. She experienced the Industrial Revolution, the American Civil War, the creation of the Canadian Constitution and the two World Wars. May she rest in peace!
