Located in front of Lodi Railway Station is a fountain containing a bronze figurative sculpture of two sandhill cranes, one landing and one taking flight, hence the title of this piece, 'Leaving and Coming Home'. This sculpture is reflected in the nearby railway station's activity of passengers arriving home from or leaving to some destination.

The artist of this sculpture is Rowland H. Cheney, who was commissioned by the City of Lodi to create this piece for $30,000. The sculpture is 9 feet tall and 7 feet wide and fits well in the center of the fountain it resides in. Lodi purchased the railway station and moved it a block south from its original location here and underwent a major restoration in 1999.

The Central Valley, and the Lodi area in particular, is wintering ground for sandhill cranes. Lodi hosts the Sandhill Crane Festival each November, attracting bird enthusiasts from throughout the state.

Cheney was later commissioned to sculpt another piece titled 'Celebrate The Harvest' for a whopping $150,000 in 2008 and located at the corner of Oak and School Streets and can be visited here.

The artist's professional website can be visited here.
