Seamen's Bethel, referred to as the "Whaleman's Chapel" in a scene from Moby Dick has a plaque inside that reads:
"IN MEMORY OF
CAPTAIN
GEORGE FRED TILTON
1861 -1932
WHALEMAN
WHO
IN 1897 WALKED 3000 MILES
THROUGH ALASKAN WINTER TO
SAVE THE LIVES OF 200 MEN
ON FOUR WHALESHIPS CAUGHT
IN ARTIC ICE"
At the top of the plaque is a relief depicition of a man in the foreground, presumably representing Tilton, with other men, dogs and ships in the background.
Surprisingly, an internet search for more information about Tilton turned up nothing.
