The vane shows a sailing barge that probably used to ply the nearby canals. It has a single mast with rigging down to the deck. A sail is partly raised and starting to billow into the wind. The sheets lead aft towards a small figure, stood at the tiller, steering the barge. On the foredeck is a another figure with a rope in his hand. On the quay, or bank of the canal, are four figures hauling on a rope. This leads to the top of the mast on the barge. The question is, are they raising the sail or towing the barge? Beneath these figures and below the barge the metal is cut to represent waves. One wonders if this was possibly made by an apprentice in the blacksmiths' shop when it was still operational.
