The latest word in garden implements when it was made, this self propelled cultivator/plough would have been the envy of all the neighbours, assuming they had never actually operated it. I'm guessing it would have been a beast to maneuver.
Running on tracks for traction in tough ground and flotation on soft ground this cultivator was powered by a single cylinder gasoline engine with Wico magneto. Behind the engine was a transmission and differential. The track appear to be mounted on a walking beam type suspension. It likely had at least two forward speeds, and possibly even a reverse gear. The machine is all steel save for wooden handle extensions. It also had a cultivator attachment that could be mounted in place of the plough seen on this one.
Never having seen one of these before, it's difficult to make a guess as to its age. The museum, however, believes it to have been made in about 1939, by Vaughn Motors of Portland, Oregon. The model is known as a Flex Tred. The company made several modes/sizes. Model "H" weighed 650 lbs., was water cooled, and was powered by a 5 hp engine. In addition to the model H the company also made models K (2.5 hp) M (3.5 hp) D (5 hp.) E-2 (8 hp) and models S,W,WS,and F.
Heres a You Tube Video of a similar model self motivating.
