Located at the corner of Orchard and 6th Streets and next to City Hall is a large tree with a boulder and plaque near its base that reads:
BICENTENNIAL CELEBRATION 1776-1976A SALUTE TO THE STATE OF NEW JERSEY BRENDAN T. BYRNE, GOVERNOR MAY 12, 1976 CITY OF COACHELLA LESTER C. COX, JR., MAYOR PRESENTED BY DESERT BEAUTIFUL, INC. THIS TREE IS DEDICATED TO THE 3RD COLONY OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA |
What is confusing about the plaque's verbiage is the mention of New Jersey being the 3rd Colony of the United States. After doing some online investigating, I discovered that New Jersey is known as the 11th Colony of the United States. Massachusetts is known as the Third Colony of the United States. In any case, this tree has grown quite large since its planting almost 40 years ago. I don't know what kind of tree this is.
