Both Surat and Nakhon Si (to use the accepted abbreviations) are southern provinces of Thailand, on the east coast of the Malay Peninsular. Both are primarily agricultural, with some light industry, though Surat is famous (or perhaps infamous) as it houses the tourist islands of Samui and Phang Na (where young people get drunk at Full Moon parties, and half moon, and quarter moon ...). Connecting the two provincial capitals is this busy highway. The area on the border is a mix of untamed land and a few commercial buildings.

Above the highway leading into Nakhon Si is this large sign, stretching across the road. It is the standard style border marker, a blue background, with three major attractions of the province listed. There is no corresponding sign for Surat. Though, strangely, there is a welcome to Surat sign in the same style, but on the same side of the road further back, so that one sees the sign as one leaves Surat—an error on someone's part? There are no movement restrictions at the border crossing, nor facilities, nor much of anything.
