Missouri sent more men to war, in proportion to her population, than any other state. The total number of Missouri Volunteers who served was 199,111. For the siege of Vicksburg, Missouri furnished 39 regiments: 17 Confederate, 22 Union.

Neosho was the Confederate Capitol of Missouri. When, on October 18, 1861, in the old Masonic building on the Northeast corner of the square, the legislature passed the Ordinance of Secession, separating Missouri from the Union.
