Der Bau des ehemaligen markgräflichen Schlosses wurde im Auftrag des Erbprinzen Georg Wilhelm von Brandenburg-Bayreuth im Jahre 1700 von dem Architekten Antonio della Porta begonnen. Nach dessen Tod 1702 führte Gottfried von Gedeler die Arbeiten weiter und vollendete das Bauwerk im Jahre 1704. Bereits 1703 erwarb Markgraf Christian Ernst das noch unfertige Schloß, um es seiner dritten Gemahlin Elisabeth Sophie zu schenken.
Hinter dem Schloß entstand ein 280 Meter breiter und 550 Meter langer Schloßgarten mit Orangerie , Konkordienkirche, Hugenottenbrunnen, Reiterstandbild sowie dem heute nicht mehr vorhandenen Heckentheater.
Am 14. Januar 1814 brach auf einem mit Gerümpel gefüllten Dachboden ein Brand aus, das Schloß brannte vollständig aus, nur das Mobiliar konnte gerettet werden.
1821 bis 1825 wurde das Schloß nach Plänen des Universitätsbaumeisters Friedrich Wilhelm Örtel wieder aufgebaut und für die Zwecke der Friedrich-Alexander-Universität hergerichtet. Das Gebäude erhielt ein wesentlich flacheres Dach als das ursprüngliche Bauwerk. Untergebracht wurde die Universitätsbibliothek, seit 1945 dient es ausschließlich der Universitätsverwaltung.
The construction of the former margrave's palace was started at the request of the Crown Prince Georg Wilhelm of Brandenburg-Bayreuth in 1700 by the architect Antonio della Porta. After his death in 1702, Gottfried von Gedeler continue the work and completed the building in 1704. Already in 1703 Margrave Christian Ernst acquired the still unfinished castle to give it to his third wife Elisabeth Sophie.
Behind the castle was a build 280 meter wide and 550 meter long palace garden with orangery, Concord-church, Huguenots fountain, an equestrian statue and the no longer existing sylvan theatre.
On 14 January 1814 a fire broke out on a junk-filled attic and the castle burned out completely, only the furniture could be saved.
From 1821 to 1825, the castle was rebuilt after plans by Friedrich Wilhelm Örtel again and prepared for the purposes of the Friedrich-Alexander-University. The building received a much flatter roof than original. Housed was the University Library, since 1945 it serves exclusively the university administration.
